  • The winemaking (Saumur-Champigny)

Picked exclusively by hand
, the grapes are first de-stemmed. Then

grapes macerate and ferment for 3 to 5 weeks at temperatures between 27 and 30°C in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. This is the alcoholic fermentation that is to say, the transformation of sugar into alcohol by yeast. This first natural fermentation is followed by a second one in vat: malolactic fermentation, corresponding to the transformation of malic acid into lactic acid.

The wine is then matured in vats or in oak barrels of 500 litres.
For the last ten years, the estate's wines are no longer chaptalised, degrees are naturally obtained (Chaptalization is a technique to increase the alcohol content by adding sugar).

René-Noël and Clotilde wishe, above all, to focus on the traditional aspect of their vinifications. Their main objective is to obtain high quality wines, every year, while respecting the characteristics of each vintage.
This desire for perfectionism is recognized by the press since the 70's. Thus, the cuvée Les Rogelins is cited as a reference of the appellation, every year.
The rigorous work handed down from father to son finds his reward in the durable quality of some great vintages like 1947, 1959, 1976, 1989 and 1997, very pleasant to drink to this day.


  • The range

cave-legrand-dsc-0512.jpgEvery year, René-Noël produces four cuvées of Saumur-Champigny. Their names refer to well-known place names.

Les Lizières: this cuvée, produced in stainless steel vats, is the « primeur » of the estate. This wine is fresh and fruity with red fruit flavours (raspberry, gooseberry, black currant).

Les Terrages: this cuvée, produced in stainless steel vats too, is richer than the previous with mellow tannins.

La Chaintrée: this wine, resulted from the best pick of plots and after a prolonged maceration, is aged for 24 months in old barrels.

Les Rogelins: benefits from maturing in new and 1 year old oak barrels for at least 24 months, is the « special reserve » of the estate.

  • Service & Accompaniment of wines and dishes

Saumur-Champigny should be served at a temperature of 13 to 15°C. This red wine could complement your meal and is particularly well suited to accompany meat (red or white) and cheese.
For old vintages, ideally, decant into a carafe before serving to release the flavours.
